Warning:

Never let a Contender or Encore hammer rest on the firing pin. If the hammer is struck, the firearm dropped on the hammer, or the hammer partially drawn back and released, the firearm may fire. Open and close the Contender to reset hammer block safety. Check function of Encore hammer's "half-cock" position and make sure hammer has rebounded off of firing pin.

For more safety information on Contender and Encore hammers, and for installation information for hammer extensions, please read this Safety Warning.

* Why "right side" or "left side" mounting of Encore extensions?

The Encore hammer has a narrow neck just forward of the spur.  Hammer extensions on this gun tend to work forward onto the narrow section and are then either rattling around or falling off of the  hammer.  Most designs rely entirely on set screw pressure to hold the extension in place, which I feel is not fully satisfactory since they must be continually retightened.

Slots on my Encore extensions are not cut quite all the way through.  This leaves a constriction at the rear of the hammer and prevents if from sliding forward.   Instead of working loose, they work tighter, as do all extensions on Contenders whose hammers are wedge shaped.  Note the fit on the Encore extension pictured above.

We, myself and the shop that does the slotting, are working on another design that is closed on the bottom instead of having the "T" slot design we now use.  This will make the extension even stronger yet, AND will permit simply flipping it over to mount it on the opposite side since the slot will be centered on the extension instead of below center as they currently are to keep strength where it is needed to resist bending if over tightened.  No one has to date ever returned a bent extension, but if we were to make the top side thinner, this would be more likely.  As it is now, the slot location prevents mounting the extension under the hammer.  A centered slot will permit it to be oriented either way, left or right side.
